Chocai, aka Chloe Cai, is an artist based in the San Francisco Bay Area. Cai moved to the U.S. from China in 2017. This shift in environment heightened her response to the complex relationships of identity, memory, and the role of the subconscious. Cai’s work in painting, drawing, ceramics, and digital art, explores the intersections of our conscious experience of the world and the subconscious impulses that guide it. In 2022,

Cai was the recipient of the Anand Family Award at Cal State East Bay University. She holds a BFA in Fine Art Practice from Cal State East Bay.

“My work explores the intersections of our conscious experience of the world and the subconscious impulses that guide it. Equally, I am interested in the neurochemicals, like dopamine, endorphins, serotonin, and oxytocin, that we produce in our bodies that then affect our perceptions of the world. If memory is the first thing that inspires my work, emotion is the surface covering all of it. Through the process of painting, I begin to understand the essence of the subconscious impulse that initiated the work. To arrive at this understanding, I rely on three key elements: circle, reflection, and entangled objects.

The Circle is a shape with no beginning and no end. This connects everything together. It is inclusive, peaceful, and powerful. Reflection is the process of questioning. I often use the mirror as an example. The opposite is always reflected. This shifts our perception of reality through presenting its opposite. Fracturing or broken reflections further complicate this perception. Entangled Objects are complicated representations of connection. These can be supportive or restrictive. They can hold one back or hold one together.”
