A group of Seniors (c/o 2020) in the CSU East Bay Art Department created this online gallery, At a Distance Gallery, to give students the opportunity to display their work in a new and resourceful way due to Covid-19 restrictions. It has now become the online platform that hosts all of the Universities gallery exhibitions.

For us at the CSU East Bay Art Department, it is important that we adapt and move forward in this unprecedented time. COVID-19 has affected the way galleries and museums present artwork to the general public and many have created online exhibitions to overcome this setback.  Pre-Covid-19 CSU East Bay presented Art students with an unique opportunity to physically showcase a curated body of work which in turn gives real, hands on experience of how to showcase and promote a solo exhibition of their own.

At a Distance Gallery gives students, faculty, and alumni a platform to exhibit their work in a modern and reinventive way. We wanted to create something lasting out of a temporary lockdown and global pandemic that would continue to bring attention to the art department and gallery shows. This virtual exhibition is meant to give the CSU East Bay art community an opportunity to connect within this digital space through viewing the exhibitions as well as an opportunity to encounter a broader online audience opposed to the smaller local community.

The work being shown spans from a wide array of media and disciplines. Students, faculty, and alumni continue to bring their artwork to the forefront for our viewing pleasure and the endless opportunities that come with a students artworks being hosted online. We might not be enjoying art in a physical space, but collectively we created a space that allows us to appreciate art, even at a distance.

Don’t be distant
