ANDRE ROSENZWEIG-RIVAS

Artists Bio:

Andre Rosenzweig- Rivas is an indigenous figurative painter based in Oakland, California. Half of his life has been spent in the United States and the other half in Honduras, split among 16 different places. He primarily works in oil colors but is comfortable with other mediums. His lens for viewing the world stems from his identity as an artist, indigenous person and peripatetic adventurer. Like many Artists, his interest in Art began during childhood and continues to this day. Lying in the space between the everyday and the fantastical, his work embodies a constant search for meaning in a chaotic universe and is often grounded in his identity as an indigenous person. For Andre, Art is a form of myth-making and it is through the stories we create that we can better understand ourselves and our world.

 Artist Statement:

My paintings speak to the worldview I was exposed to while growing up as a Miskito Indian in Honduras. They are concerned with the ways this worldview can be influenced and changed over time due to colonization and cross-cultural exchange. The figures are either emerging from or being absorbed by their environment. In a way, the people and their setting can be viewed as one and the same – a cohesive whole. The figures in my work are a part of nature and nature is part of who they are.
